There’s something utterly mesmerising about watching a cake being made, which is perhaps why the Great British Bake Off is so popular.
It also explains the success of a new viral video where a three-tier cake has beautiful marble-style icing poured over it.
More than 11,000 people on Reddit have upvoted the entrancing video, which shows purple liquid icing being made in a jug before it is poured over a chocolate cake.
The end result is quite frankly stunning, and the cake looks like the night sky.
Professional baker Kesenia Penkina filmed herself making a mirror glaze and then pouring it over a chocolate cake in a truly satisfying and mesmerising video
The icing in the video is a mirror glaze, which has become increasingly trendy in the last few years.
A mirror glaze is icing that leaves a seemingly impossibly shine that is so polished that you can often see your face in it.
Many people use the glaze to create a marbled effect that contains many colours, and one of the most popular glazes is galaxy-inspired icing that looks like the Milky Way.
The mirror glaze the baker makes is made up of different shades of purple which makes a marbled effect. She finishes the cake off with dazzling gold leaf
It is surprisingly easy to make a mirror glaze but it’s important to pour it when it is still very warm
The cake in the video, which was posted on Reddit by George_Sawan, was made by Canadian patissier Ksenia Penkina, who runs baking classes.
Her marbled purple mirror glaze cake is finished with dazzling gold leaf, and looks very impressive.
However a mirror glaze is not as hard to make as it looks.
The icing is a mix of gelatine, sugar, water, corn syrup, white chocolate and sweetened condensed milk as well as any food colourings you wish to use.
It needs to be heated up to near boiling point before cooling down to about 28-30C.
It then needs to be poured over a cake at this temperature when the glaze is still pourable and before the icing hardens.
