How Could Audiobooks Help You Sleep?
Feeling a little bit skeptical about audiobooks and their benefits? Here are three reasons why audiobooks can be a great way to help you feel well-rested:
Breaks You Free From Social Media
Ever noticed that you pull out your phone when you’re trying to get some rest? Well, I’ve certainly done so plenty of times. And as much as I hate it, It’s getting out of control. But with audiobooks,
I noticed that I could keep them playing in the background and still get some rest. I don’t have to force myself to keep my eyes on my phone while my body kindly asks for some rest. So, it’s a great way to break free from social media for bedtime.
Shakes Off the Pressure
Upon doing research, I noticed that many people get into audiobooks to sleep better at night. But why? Well, we’re all going through different stages in life. Some of them might be disturbing, while others might not. So, playing an audiobook can be a great way to temporarily forget about all that stuff and fall asleep for the night. Plus, some audiobooks have voice actresses with very soothing voices.
ASMR Can Help You Sleep Better
I’m pretty sure you’ve logged into YouTube and noticed that you’re getting all these weird ASMR videos on your recommended. Well, ASMR videos have hijacked popular sites like YouTube and Twitch, and they are not going anywhere.
Why? Because all this whispering, tapping can create sounds that help listeners sleep at night. And like we said, audiobooks tend to have voice actresses with soft voices. So, you’ll probably enjoy that while trying to get some rest.
How to Pick the Right Audiobooks for Sleep?
Take enough time out of your day to pick the best audiobooks for sleep before going to bed. You don’t want to get a terrible book that makes you question your life choices. That said, here’s what you need to know:
I’m pretty sure most people wouldn’t appreciate listening to someone with a high-pitched voice. While this can work in some scenarios, sleeping is not one of those. Fortunately, most audiobook websites have a play button that you can use for free. So, make sure that your narrator doesn’t make you want to cry yourself to sleep.
We’re all different, so you may have to figure out what works best for you. But if there’s one thing we can say, you should stay away from overwhelming topics like abuse and torture.
Don’t Forget About the Sleep Timer.
When you think you have finally fallen asleep, the audio playing in the background wakes you up. But you could avoid this if you took enough time to set up the sleep timer.
If you’re unsure what that is, it’s just a feature most audiobook apps have to give the listener enough time to fall asleep. So, when the time is up, the audiobook will stop playing. And to make things even better, it’ll bookmark your book. So, you won’t wake up and forget where you left off.

- Smartphone: Using a smartphone is probably the easiest way to play audiobooks.
- Tablet: If you don’t feel like using your smartphone, you can also use a tablet.

It will fluctuate through all kinds of emotions while you are reading it.
Another country is one of the best audiobooks with captive yet disturbing world-building. This story sets in Greenwich Village and Harlem, New York City, around the late 1950s. This book tells the downfall of Rufus Scott and how his death would later impact so many people’s life. The book also explains how hard it was for him to grow up in a racist and homophobic society.
Rufus Scott is a black African American that dealt with both racism and depression. All these emotions pent up—like hating himself for looking different would later lead to his early death. The story then goes in-depth about his tragic death and how his friends would struggle to try to comprehend his death.

The story is about a young couple with a great relationship until a lie destroys their relationship. If you love romance, sadness, and drama, there’s a good chance that this audiobook is for you.
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a well-known story in American literature. This book is about the heart-breaking story of Maya Angelou, an ordinary African American. The story takes place in the Southern United States after their parents ditched Maya and her brother. But then they would be sent to their grandmother and uncle.
This is when things would get pretty bad for Maya as she would experience stuff like racism and sexual abuse. However, these terrible things would later make her into a dignified, strong, and independent woman. The book can be heart-breaking at times, but it is an enjoyable story that shares valuable lessons along the way.
The English Patient
Want to go on a trip and listen to audiobooks? Well, here’s The English Patient, which is one of my favorite audiobooks for road trips. The story takes place in a hospital where Hana, a 20-year-old Canadian woman, cares for soldiers. And as you would imagine, she’s seen some terrible stuff in her career.
So she learns that she cannot develop any feelings for her patients. But Hana would soon learn about her father’s death and quickly fall into an endless pit of depression. As a result, she made up her mind and decided to take care of one of her patients—also known as the “English” patient.
But due to his severe injuries, the English patient can’t remember his name and move. The story goes back and forth between the “English” patient’s memories from his terrible accident and current life. The story can be confusing at times, but it’s so good that the language feels lyrical.
The Hidden Life of Trees
The Hidden Life of Trees is a popular book published originally in German. But it was then translated into English due to its insane success. This book is about how trees have feelings, just like human beings do. Peter claims that trees can also act as parents and neighbors.
But unlike us humans, trees communicate through a so-called “worldwide web.” Peter Wohlleben is a German forester who has devoted his life to discovering much along the way. That alone is what makes this book so overwhelmingly good. So, if you’re a little bit open-minded and willing to empathize with the author’s devotion and passion, you will enjoy this book.
Where the Past Begins
If you have read anything from Amy Tan, you probably know just how talented she is. And this book is no exception to this rule. Where the Past Begins is a book about Amy tan’s past experiences where she writes to know more about herself.
She also talks about what it’s like going to school, being different from other kids, and having immigrant parents. She often explores old family stories in her work and how all these circumstances impacted her life. So, it is a fascinating read if you want to know more about Amy tan’s personal life.
A Gentleman in Moscow
A Gentleman in Moscow is one of the best audiobooks for sleep among avid readers. Imagine living in a Hotel in Russia for the rest of your life. Well, that’s Alexander Ilyich Rostov for you. But he’s not doing this out of his kindness.

Instead, this guy sucks it up and tries to live his best life inside the hotel. And along the way, we’re introduced to several obstacles Rostov will face during his life sentence. One thing I can say about this author is that he knows how to woven fiction into historically accurate facts. So, he can make you believe that this story is real. All in all, if you love fiction and history, you’ll probably enjoy this audiobook.
To the Lighthouse
This story takes place in the Isle of Skye in Scotland around 1910 and 1920 with the Ramsay family. The story starts with Mrs. Ramsay’s son wanting to go to the lighthouse. Unfortunately, Mr. Ramsay claims that the weather is not good enough so nobody should go. As a result, both Mr. Ramsay and Mrs. Ramsay get into an argument. And things wouldn’t get any better as the First World War was around the corner.
The novel uses a stream of consciousness to tell the story, which can be hard to understand. But if you’re familiar with Virginia Woolf’s previous books like “Waves” you’ll have a much easier time. But regardless, you will feel as if you were viewing the world with her eyes.
The Little Prince
Most people have heard about the Little Prince since it is probably one of the most popular books. The story is simple but so profoundly imagined, beautifully written, and brilliantly constructed. This book was initially published in French, but the English translation is on point. This story is about an innocent young boy who would explore different planets in space.
